How to switch Java version

You can have multiple installed versions of JDK on one machine. At any time, You can decide which Java version you want to make default version and should be used from command line automatically. The update-alternatives command is very helpful in switching between JDk versions, it will list all the installed Java versions. From that list, you can select which is the default version, you can want to keep.

All available Java versions will be listed as shown below, with a sequence number. You can select any Java version using these sequence numbers. An Asterisk (*) mark shows that this Java version is currently being used as default version.

How to verify java version and java installation

Once you have installed java in your system, the next step is to check whether it has been installed properly or not. This tutorial explains the steps to check java installation in your system. It covers both the cases, first if Path variable for java is not set and second if Path variable for java is set after installation.

1. If Path variable is not set, to check if java is installed properly or not, open a command terminal like CMD, Secure Shell Client etc. and change or move to the java installation directory upto bin folder, now execute the command java -version . It will display the installed java version and other relevant information about java. Java compiler version can also be checked by executing javac -version command.

The image above shows the steps for checking java installation in Windows operating system using CMD terminal. Similarly for linux based operating system, execute the same command in any linux based terminal to check java installation.

2. If Path is set, no need to move to java installation directory, just execute the command java -version in any directory. It will display the installed java version and other relevant information about java. For compiler version execute javac -version command.

If any of the above methods returns the version correctly, which means java is installed properly. Now you can start your first program in java.

How do I know if Java is installed on Windows 10 ?

The steps are same irrespective of which version of windows you are using. Just follow above steps to check if java is installed on windows 10 or not.

If java is not installed, it will display an error message in Windows like «java is not recognized as internal or external command, operable program or batch file» after executing the command.

There are two reasons of above error message, First java is not installed at all, you should install java and Second java is installed but Path variable is not set properly, you should set Path variable for java.

Determine Java Version in Windows From GUI

We can use the Java menu which resides in the Control Panel.

And then In the General tab click to About button. This will open a new window that will provide information about the current Java or JRE version.

We can see and get the following information.

• Version 8 specifies the main version of Java which is 8 in this example.
• Update 144 specifies the minor version which numbered as 144.

Determine Java Version Linux (CentOS, RedHat, Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Kali, Mint)

We will use java command from the command line to get information about Java or JRE installation of Linux distributions.

We can see that a lot of information about Java and the platform is provided.

• openjdk version «1.8.0_131» is the current version of Java. We can see that the Java implementation is OpenJDK which is an open version of Java for Linux distributions.
• ubuntu is the operating system where Java is created.
• OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM specifies the Java CPU architecture which is 64 bit.

We can also use the currently installed Java version from the web. We will navigate to the following URL which is provided by Oracle Java. We will see a screen like below. First, we will click on the Agree and Continue button.

For security reasons, current popular browsers have disabled the Java or JRE by default. So Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, etc. will show a warning like Java is disabled or not installed . If Java is enabled for browser we will see the current version of Java without a problem.

Java releases its updates very often. Therefore, it is important for a java programmer to check the java version every now and then and stay updated with the latest version. In this article, we will teach you a couple of ways in which you can check the java version.
Step 1 – Open Java Control Panel
First of all, open up the control panel and then click on the “Programs” option
There will be a Java Icon present. Click on it and the Java control panel window will open up.
Under the general tab, click on the “about” button.

Step 2 – View Java Information
After that a window will open up where you will be able to find the Version along with the build release.

Step 3 – Go to Java.com
There is also another way to find the java version and that is through internet.
In order to check the java version online, open any web browser and go to java.com. Once there, click on the “Verify Java Version” button.

Step 4 – View Java Version
Once you are done, a dialogue box will appear which will require you to run the Application.
Simply click on the “Run” button to proceed further. A new page will load where you will be displayed with the java version installed on your computer.
